UNESCO Chair and UNITWIN program on Education for Sustainable Lifestyles

Hedmark University University of Applied Sciences is committed to actively developing competence and cooperation which will increase social responsibility and quality education and research nationally, regionally, and internationally. As a part of this process and on the basis of its longstanding engagement in education and research about responsible living, Hedmark University of Applied Sciences has established a UNESCO Chair and UNITWIN Program on Education about Sustainable Lifestyles.

Building on 20 years of value-based, holistic, and interdisciplinary work led by Hedmark University of Applied Sciences this program will contribute to further develop the work of PERL/UNITWIN (Partnership for Education and Research about Responsible Living) by assisting in bridging the knowledge/action gap, stimulating informed choice and social learning, mapping changes in attitudes and behaviour, reporting on innovative initiatives, facilitating curriculum development, building capacity in teacher training, contributing to the discourse on responsible living, and cultivating multi-stakeholder alliances.

In a world characterized by inequity, social unrest, life-style related illnesses and environmental degradation, rethinking how we organize our daily life, socialize, share and educate is a prerequisite for growth and prosperity.

Already in 2002, Agenda 21 pointed at consequences of imbalanced use of natural resources and the injustice of existing extremes of wealth and poverty. More recently, in light of research on climate change and on the links between lifestyles, health and human development there are increasinglyurgent calls for a significant paradigm shift towards more sustainable, responsible ways of living.

Developing Hedmark University of Applied Sciences's work on responsible living through the UNESCO Chair and UNITWIN Program on sustainable lifestyles is a means of contributing to the follow-up of the U.N. Decade on Education for Sustainable Development (DESD 2005-2014), entitled the Global Action Program. It also provides opportunities to contribute to the global 10-year Framework of Programs for Sustainable Consumption and Production adopted by government leaders at the World Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro in 2012. Additionally, the program supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's)

  • Hold consultations between UNITWIN partners to co-create together strategies and initiatives
  • Carry out research on responsible, sustainable lifestyles
  • Arrange capacity building seminars/workshops
  • Contribute to courses, webnairs, and conferences about sustainable lifestyles
  • Exchange staff and students
  • Create, translate and disseminate new learning methodologies and materials
  • Participate in the Global Media Competition on Responsible Living
  • Assist in the development of a virtual game about sustainable lifestyles
  • Contribute to the launching of the 10-Year Framework of Programs on SCP’s Sustainable Lifestyles and Education Program

The transition towards more responsible, sustainable lifestyles is a complex one. The challenges to be faced are systemic and personal, long-term and immediate. Determining what is ethically acceptable and socially desirable is dependent on many interrelated processes which must involve as many diverse stakeholders as possible.
