The Center for Collaborative Learning for Sustainable Development facilitates initiatives that provide learners with necessary knowledge and skills to become independent, critical and aware consumers; with the ability to reflect over quality of life and definitions of “needs”, and with the didactic competence to plan, justify, carry out and evaluate education for sustainable lifestyles.

Collecting and Sharing Best Practices

Drawing on the breadth of its global partnership, The Center will continue to carry on the work of CCN and PERL by regularly collecting and creating compendiums of best practices in education for sustainable/responsible living.

Earlier PERL compendiums of best practices have served as valuable resources to inspire wider replication and upscaling in education for sustainable consumption and sustainable living practices.

Developing Pedagogy, Teaching Approaches and Curriculum

Throughout two decades, CCN and PERL have strived to promote student-centered, active and experiential learning methodologies, and significant efforts have been made to strengthen the use of progressive pedagogies within curriculum and classroom.

This has led to the development, testing and piloting of dozens of learning packs and innovations in teaching approaches and pedagogy. The Center will continue to promote these initiatives.

Training Teachers in Progressive Pedagogies

It has been well recognized that teacher training is essential for improving education and learning. Beyond testing and innovating in teacher trainer at the PERL/UNITWIN partner teacher education institutes, The Center will continue to conduct national and international seminars, workshops and training sessions around the world for both in-service and pre-service teachers.

Innovation in Research and Knowledge about Responsible Living

Through innovative projects utilizing action research and design principles PERL/UNITWIN partners have actively work to advance knowledge about responsible, sustainable living.

Focusing in diverse locations around the world on how we can create more sustainable approaches to everyday living has resulted in unique solutions from different cultures and contexts.

Redefining the Role of the Social and Political in Shaping Sustainability

In the work of PERL, a strong position was created for the role of the social and also the political in shaping and influencing sustainability. Often battling against a trend for technological solutions, the PERL partners have explored and researched value-based learning and lifestyle/behaviour choices. These studies repeatedly confirm the vital role of the individual, the community and the society have in realizing everyday sustainability.

Through collaboration with UNEP and the Marrakech Task Forces on Sustainable Lifestyles and on Education for Sustainable Consumption, these initiatives helped to ensure the positioning of the role of the social dimension and of education within international agreements and programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production.

Strengthening Policy for Advancing Consumer Citizenship, Sustainable Consumption and ESC

The PERL partnership has drawn on their expertise to promote/support policy improvement for advancing consumer citizenship, sustainable consumption and education policy on these topics. The Center carries forth this work in the context of the Global Action Plan for Education for Sustainable Development and the 10-Year Framework of Programs for Sustainable Consumption and Production.

The work of partners has led to policy support and the development of national guidelines for a number countries in Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa as well as at the international level.
