A new Center has been established at Hedmark University for Applied Sciences to strengthen work for sustainable development and further the activities of the PERL/UNITWIN network.

Focusing on education for sustainable development 

On the of 9th June 2016 the Board of Hedmark University of Applied Sciences approved the establishment of a Center for Collaborative Learning for Sustainable Development. The Center has its base in Hamar and will strengthen international networking, research and projects related to sustainable development in its broadest sense (public health, ecology, lifestyle, economics, etc.). This joint initiative is important in light of the new Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030) and Norway's focus on research and education for sustainable development.

The Center's main focus 

The center has as its primary focus to further the work of PERL (The Partnership for Education and Research about Responsible Living) and fulfill HUAS’s obligations related to its UNESCO Chair for Education for Sustainable Lifestyles. These obligations include, among others,  PERL’s role as "Key Partner" in the UN's Global Action Program for Education for Sustainable Development and that of coordinator of the educational part of the global 10-year Framework of Programs for Sustainable Lifestyles.

Responsibilities: national and international 

Hedmark University University of Applied Sciences (HUAS) has, since the 1990s, played a leading role in education for responsible, sustainable consumption, both nationally and internationally. HUAS has for 20 years worked closely with the Ministry of Children-, Equality, and Inclusion (BLD) and the Ministry of Education with the organization and development of, among  other things, CCN (The Consumer Citizenship Network) and PERL (The Partnership for Education and Research about Responsible Living). These efforts have supported the national consumer policy goal of having informed and aware consumers. Since 2000 HUAS has also led the national advisory group for consumer education in schools initiated by BLD. Additionally, HUAS has played an active part in the implementation of the UN Decade for Education for Sustainable Development and the Marrakech Process for Sustainable Consumption and Production, with both UNEP and UNESCO as partners. 

An extensive collaborative network 

Over the years, PERL has built up a substantial international network. It has established cooperation with 140 universities, colleges and international organizations in 50 countries. Cooperation with the majority of these organizations has lasted more than 15 years. 32 of these have committed themselves through the UNITWIN agreement to continue to cooperate closely on with HUAS.
