Abstract: The silvopastoral system is a livestock production option that involves the interaction of woody plants, herbaceous plants and domestic herbivores with the aim of maximising a sustainable production of animal commodities, meat, milk, wool etc. The project focuses on understanding the role of trees as drivers of fundamental ecological processes with a bearing for the sustainable production of forage and animal products. We will assess the properties of the tree cover and its relations to the soil and herbaceous vegetation and the behaviour and diet of livestock. The research will be carried out in cooperation with local farmers in two places in Nicaragua and during the process results will be tested and implemented.
